The Four Seasons: a distinctive Western classical masterpiece

Anyone who knows me well enough will know I am a music nut(not among the popular fruits : cashew, almond, hazelnut, but implying I am moved in multifarious ways by different kinds of world music, which characteristic has had a poignant slant to it ever since I came out of my extended hospital stay at Levindale(https://share.google/hp6J6OvDqNR6FfNE9), following my car accident on 2/7/2013 (hydroplaning etc. etc.) in the US state of Maryland, when I was blessed my voice box was spared, considering everything!

One brilliant composition that can be a rich conversation piece is Antonio Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons'{ 🫡}:

So much can be written in praise of each movement(for a season), but the opening minute or so is so distinctive a sound everyone recognizes it after hearing it once.

Sport

I played squash with Mohan yesterday (2/8/2025), and I enjoyed it greatly. Granted, the manoeuvring is confined to the playing area, so the physicality will not achieve the levels of badminton or tennis, but there are specialities of the game that someone who is playing should appreciate: with tennis and badminton, you learn to manoeuver the projectile(ball or shuttlecock) to an area of the court the opponent does not anticipate or cannot respond to in the requisite time.

Each sport has certain terms that are synonymous with its play. For example:

  • Tennis:
  • Serve(usually overhand, which is underhand in badminton, the required trajectory of the projectile, being toward the court in tennis, and above it in badminton’s case:down for tennis, up for badminton
  • Slice(this manoeuvres the ball so it saves the player the necessity to use energy for ending the point. It is a touch shot, not associated with power, but helps change the rhythm of play mid-point
  • Overhead smash: this is usually a point-ending tactic, and is not expected to have a similar response
  • Groundstroke (tennis or badminton): This is a shot a player hits from the baseline toward the net or away from, the key distances the shot are measured against being the dimensions of the court, the directions being crosscourt and down-the-line
  • Spins: Topspin and underspin, which relate to the movement of the ball vertically and through the court(a slice has underspin, and no topspin); the shot is called flat if the ball is not consciously imparted any spin; almost necessarily, the 2 spins are closely linked to the groundstrokes, and determine the style of play a player chooses, whether he/she prefers to play from the baseline(topspin to lift the ball vertically) or approach the net to intercept and finish shots when there is an opportunity that presents itself
  • Of the great adversaries Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, Nadal is primarily a baseliner,, while Federer mixes solid net play into his playing strategy, my knowledge of the sport allowing me to categorize most players as one or the other, primarily a baseliner or all court player, meaning one who uses net play. I will list 5 from the ATP and 5 from the WTA, for a balanced write-up.

  • Roger Federer - All-court
  • Rafael Nadal - baseliner
  • Novak Djokovic - baseliner
  • Pete Sampras - all-court player, with an emphasis on the net
  • Andre Agassi - baseliner
  • Justine Henin - all court player
  • Venus & Serena Williams - baseliner
  • Steffi Graf - all-court player
  • Monica Seles - baseliner
  • Lindsay Davenport - baseliner

Perusal of this list proves that power and touch can have more or less the same effect, touch requiring more application of the player’s range and the ball’s range, vertical or horizontal, hence making for tennis that is easier on the eye.

Squash and tennis have a great deal in common, except it appears that one’s primary opponent in squash is not another human but the wall, so, for the benefit of the player(to keep his/her blood pressure within normal bounds), it should be seen as mandatory to play with another player 😀

Hindu deities

The following paragraph is from the Wikipedia page on "Hindu deities";'Hindu deities are the gods and goddesses in Hinduism. Deities in Hinduism are as diverse as its traditions, and a Hindu can choose to be polytheisticpantheisticmonotheisticmonistic, even agnosticatheistic, or humanist. The terms and epithets for deities within the diverse traditions of Hinduism vary, and include DevaDeviIshvaraIshvariBhagavān and Bhagavati.'

New blog about memory, or expand this one?? The latter is the consensus

I enjoy blogging, and have blogged with relish before, adding photos and links to enhance points or for emphasis.

I see that every human has concern for his/her abilities to recall and retain snippets of information about what has happened,in his/her life or in general, so blogging about that could fill several blogs, but I prefer adding to whatever I already have, which would be smarter than reinventing the wheel.

I think that music goes a long way towards making new memories and kindling old ones:case in point:

Mozart - Classical Music for Brain Power

Is this a perfect place to harken back to that classic movie(not classic because of age, but its import on so many levels)

Coorg trip

The trip was planned to commemorate Appa and Amma's 43rd wedding anniversary and a decade since my TBI{{let this be the final and hopefully sole, mention of the cartload(s?) of associated mental baggage I lug around, looking to dispense with it anytime.

We started out on 1/7/2023 at 7 am. We traveled by car and reached Coorg, staying at Madikeri in a homestay.

A short walk from the homestay is Raja's Seat, which literally translates to 'The seat of the king',is a culturally significant site.

It is a small pavilion made of brick and mortar with surrounding four pillars, bridged by arches in the middle of a garden.

We went to Talakauveri, the source of the river Cauvery.

We bought mango chocolate, dark chocolate and jujubes.

We next went to a temple in the area in the middle of a heavy downpour.

Since there is a dress code at the temple,we had to buy dhotis for Mohan and me(Rs.300).

On the ride back to the hotel, there was a dicey situation when a stream of smoke emanated from the carburetor when Mohan operated the clutch since there was heavy traffic on the incline.

Returning from Thalakaveri,we had lunch at Tasmi restaurant.

For dinner,we ordered kulchas(10) and 2 curries-(Rs.1050).

3/7/2023,Monday::

*Went for a walk in the morning, bought bread, milkshakes and buttermilk.

*We had breakfast at Shanti Sagar

*Appa bought a FastTrack sticker linked to IDFC Bank

*Took the car to an auto garage for a quick checkup following the clutch episode.

*Mercara coffee plantation

Learned that the significant coffee beans are Arabica,Robusta and Peaberry

Saw the bushes of plants harvested for the spices cardamom, pepper, clove, cinnamon, vanilla and others, fruits like avocado, litchi and citron

*Thimayya museum

Below is a stark instance of one of nature's pet quirks-a flower subsisting seemingly on nothing:a flowering plant propped against a column of pipes traversing a long wall!

*Abby falls

July 4,2023::

Parents' wedding anniversary. The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the visit to the Dubare elephant training camp[Elephants at Dubare training camp, and observing the pachyderms and their handlers.

Kumkis are working elephants, and the assistants to the mahouts are called காவடி.

We visited Bylakuppe, the largest Tibetan refugee camp, situated 90 kms away from Mysore on the Mysore Madikeri highway, which is the largest Tibetan refugee camp housing more than 18000 Tibetans in exile.Their rich cultural heritage  has resulted in the sprouting of many mammoth and fascinating monasteries. There are 3 big golden idols(of Padmasambhava,Buddha and Amitayus) in a massive hall we sat in for meditation. Although they recommended maintaining silence, the recommendation was not followed to the letter.

We had lunch in the monastery, steamed and fried momos,Appa ordering cauliflower manchurian,Mohan settling for noodles, which we all shared.
Post-lunch,we had ice cream.

Mohan purchased a book of Tibetan philosophy,'The Tibetan book of the dead' and gifted it to Amma, which she is finding hard to comprehend.

Mohan had to return to Hyderabad because he was getting numerous phone calls from Zessta.

He had booked a room for us to stay in Mysore in Akshaya Inn,located on Hyder Ali Road.

The room rent was Rs.3000,the biggest advantage being the complimentary(sumptuous)breakfast offered in the morning.

We went to the Mysore palace(entrance of Rs.100;the shoes had to be removed by visitors, surprising to me).

There was a wooden replica of the Wudeyar dynasty palace,a collection of dolls,a golden howdah, weighing 750kg,silver chairs with crystal legs.

The palace is perfectly functional for the ruler to interact with his people, and well maintained today for visitors.

The howdah is taken out every year during Dussehra.

Previously, the king occupied the throne, which is the seat of Chamundi Devi.

We visited 2 temples, the Prasanna Krishnaswamy temple and Lakdhmiramana temple.

It being July 4,the 43rd anniversary of my parents' wedding,Amma was thrilled we made these visits.

Mohan left for the bus stand, while we returned to the room by car.
In the evening,we went to Chamundi hills by auto(thankfully, because it was pitch dark, and Appa sensibly did not drive, which is not recommended beyond a certain age).Amma and I sang 'Panchashat peetaroopini' in Karnataka Devagandhari.

We ordered dinner at the hotel,of parathas and dal makhani.

In the morning,we had complimentary breakfast and left for Chennai. We took an additional 4 hours because we missed 2 roads, one to NH48,and had to retrace our steps to correct for the mistake.

Appa had to contend with darkness when at the wheel.

We bought bread, banans and guava and ate them before going to bed.

Amma's chronicle of a chequered period in our lives....

I feel stymied when asked to elaborate on the gifts of someone very close to me,like Amma or Mohan or Appa, for I am confounded by the need to be as wordy as anyone could but not posessing equal gifts  of exposition in English.

The video above shows Amma thumbing through her diaries of the time she spent in Prince  George's hospital when I was recovering from my TBI in Levindale Hebrew and Geriatric Center,Baltimore [my photos of the time,at Google Photos:Levindale]
Some things that stand out to me each time I glance at Amma's diaries are:
*Her appropriate glorification of my handwriting, which blossomed from a rude scrawl to chiseled letters over time.
*testing my vocabulary
*writing in Tamil
* making me give written answers to certain questions, primarily to gauge the state of my mind.

My near[and dear] family and myself:their aptitudes[ I do not boast,I think! :)]

  • Appa:

  • Amma:
Oh,Amma,I love you so dearly, but since a blog is not the forum to express thus,I will check my ardor!...

There has to be a crown affixed with the word"Motivation",which needs to be bestowed on her, since I have relied on so much of Amma's pristine quality(which thought any of her students from schools past will agree with!),through most of my life, especially when embarking on activities previously unknown to me::her unmatched skills were in full display during my stay at Sinai Hospital[ here is a lot of the diary she painstakingly kept during that time:it is pure gold!:https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0?ui=2&ik=76a4bfe613&attid=0.1&permmsgid=msg-a:r-8851985311268080889&th=16682b6b455b88e6&view=att&disp=inline&realattid=f_jndbz9fg0]
  • Mohan:My elder brother,on his way here today! He is widely revered for his smarts, which have led him to acquire a fairly diverse literary habit over time(which, hence, I have benefited from,as well)
  • Myself:This has the strong likelihood of turning into a vanity piece[and I do not overstate things one bit!],because I am tremendously gifted, which any right-thinking person will freely admit:not just in my musical pursuits[Carnatic and Hindusthani in the Indian tradition, playing Western music on a keyboard],but I have dabbled in a lot over time, sometimes cooking up a storm in the kitchen, and written a fair bit(have blogged successfully too,here!![ https://memorylane2956.blogspot.com/].

Aptness of Google searches:instances

  1. I read https://indianexpress.com/article/india/rahul-gandhi-sambit-patra-bjp-7492836/ and googled 'cuckoo': What is cuckoo bird famous for? answers:
This is the famous bird of Europe whose voice is imitated by cuckoo clocks (and whose call, coo-coo, gave the name to the entire cuckoo family). It is well known as a brood parasite: females lay their eggs in the nests of smaller birds, and their hapless "hosts" raise only young cuckoos.

Mosfilm

Mosfilm's wikipedia page  details[the first paragraph summarizes well:"Mosfilm (Russian: Мосфильм, Mosfil’m pronounced [məsˈfʲilʲm]) is a film studio which is among the largest and oldest in the Russian Federation and in Europe. Its output includes most of the more widely acclaimed Soviet-era films, ranging from works by Andrei Tarkovsky and Sergei Eisenstein (commonly considered the greatest Soviet director), to Red Westerns to the Akira Kurosawa co-production Dersu Uzala (Дерсу Узала) and the epic War and Peace (Война и Мир).

The legendary output of this Russian studio, needs to be explored by one and all, particularly lovers of cinema!

The names are simply awe-inspiring:Kurosawa,Eisenstein,Tarkovsky[I revere him most of all!] and a host of others, many of whom I know nothing of!

The dedicated Youtube subscription page, which can be accessed here:https://www.youtube.com/user/mosfilm,should have become every serious movie lover's favorite haunt ever since it came out!

Self-exhortation

Just looked at your bank accounts, the local SBI and BOA,and surprise of surprises!Your SBI account has currently 11,40,000+,which is $15000+,so a fat sum!!!I have been a measly spender always, never splurging on clothes or food, both of which I love!

The single advice I give now is,get back to that life as early as you can,so you can earn tons(however much of an exaggeration as that is!)

Journey(☺☺☺☺)with Appa to purchase household items!

The joke is,that I was pulled up for my poorer(than normal) gait continuously by Appa, and my postural deficiencies were drilled home to the point they were loathsome even to me!This hideousness(that is my left knee)is a byproduct of my missteps!😿😭

My regrets

This blog was titled aptly "Memory Lane" by me,and must have, like all blogs,a defining post. This could be it for this blog.I composed an email this morning I hope to send to my advisor at UMD this afternoon:{{My status is currently very different from what I would like, given my performance so far.I had a secret wish to make it big in places like Lockheed Martin, but I was powerless to change how things turned out then.It is pointless to think or talk much about it so many years after it happened, but I still suffer from the effects of the car accident I suffered then!

Your words of motivation will push me forward at this stage,to set my sights lower,so I can achieve my best at least.

At the very least,I see that I did not put in the right efforts at the critical time,but I can see I should try to approach groups in IIT Madras,working on familiar research,so I can share the knowledge I have acquired over time,and learn as much as possible.Before the coronavirus pandemic, I had a very good dynamic with Ranjith Mohan,who heads the RAFT Lab in the aerospace department at IITM.[[https://home.iitm.ac.in/ranjith.m/Members.html]]}}

Repetitiveness

This is,somehow, the ideal spot for me to launch into a tirade of self-criticism:

This is a note I wrote to myself::
Even watching a programming tutorial on Youtube (on Python),make notes of what has been watched so you don't become repetitive guru, please. This is something you were fearful of ever being called thus,so WAKE UP PLEASE!
Should write down starting and end times of video at least!!!

Friday, April 24, 2020

Let not 'repetition' become your rightful second name['gleeful' would be your worst move ever!]

For an example,this is my last note of a bunch to myself:{{Last request of this type::you better go over the timestamps list of the Python Youtube tutorial{{https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uQrJ0TkZlc&t=6790s}} to know where to begin then}}

Covid-19 tennis slap in my face

It is amazing!I am not a sporting fanatic by any means, but I have followed tennis for years on end with a singular passion, and error messages like those below tell me that I am geographically jinxed😆!

United in this fight: Nadal, Djokovic extend generous COVID-19 pledges

https://www.tennis.com/pro-game/2020/03/rafael-nadal-novak-djokovic-join-fight-against-covid-19-pau-gasol-federer-muguruza/88156/

This makes me proud of having such a fantastic sport to admire,follow and support,whose top athletes rise up to serve a humanitarian need when it arises.Just reading the numbers makes me swell;

Of course,Spain is the second-most affected nation in Europe. Several Spanish athletes, like soccer player Iker Casillas, have joined in, along with Garbine Muguruza, Carla Suarez Navarro and former world No. 3 David Ferrer, who retired last season.

I don't demand anything more.

Life lesson:after having experienced situation A once(fully or not),you should be able to make the judgement of not experiencing ALL of that situation again calmly, without batting an eyelid. You learn nothing new,and could use this time more profitably to do so!PLEASE!😢😢😢😢
